HTML 5 Vs. XHTML 2 Who will lead the next generation of web authoring?
June 17th, 2007
The need for a new technology!
15 years ago, HTML started as a documenting language for scientists to share their work and researche resutls. Then it became the foundation of simple web authoring. It evolved over time and became more rich and stable “surely not rich enough”, for example the image and form elements were added, WYSIWYG features were implemented, then was replaced with the touch of CSS and etc…
In the past few years, the Web has evolved yet again, reaching a much more dynamic state than it had before becoming something called “Web 2.0″. Since the web keeps on evolving and the audience requirements keeps on growing.
The Comparison
Basically, HTML 5 or WA1 “Web Applications 1.0″ is a reconstruction or restructuring attempt to extend the current HTML 4 and XHTML 1. It is an incremental step forward rather than a grand jump forward in the style of XHTML 2.
HTML 5 is still working within the borders of HTML 4 and XHTML 1 and providing clever solutions to address some of the faults in HTML 4 and XHTML 1. It can be also be served as HTML or XML. So, unlike XHTML 2, HTML 5 is influenced by the current state of the art (Web browser technology)
So far, The HTML5 is still in Working Draft stage and it was said that using it depends on the acceptance of the audience and how fast browser vendors would implement it, The W3C foundation mentioned that HTML5 would advance to recommendation by 2010!
While XHTML 2 is considered as a bold step forward intended to create an architecture that will become the host language to many other W3C technologies that are already in use, or in still the works. XHTML 2 is based solely on XML, a technology that the most believe will enable the Web to reach its full potential. XHTML 2 is driven by how markup should be used, rather than by how markup is currently used.
The Goals
There is a slight difference between the implementations and specifications of these languages but i guess at the end the goals are somehow the same to result in making the web more accessible, usable!
While HTML 5 calls for a consistent implementation of these most basic specifications in all current browsers and devices and focuses on fixing the current bugs! XHTML 2 were to be more Accessible, Usable, Device Independent and Semantic and calls for universal access.

These days, I am mainly using XHTML+CSS. I use it consistently on my designs and I usually get the two things I am interested in: a page that opens fast and is easy to modify. Will HTML5 be able to supersede that?

Tedel,
XHTML came to replace the standard HTML with a flavor of XML, now this is what XHTML2 will be focusing on.
HTML5, is still a working draft with lots of different thought and ideas! you can read that on http://www.whatwg.org/specs/web-apps/current-work/
Main points that i was shocked with is that HTML5 will be more open to different coding styles and all will be valid, that will be a disaster i guess!
